Coward is a fresh cut by a dull blade. It's an exposed nerve ending teaming with bacteria. It's nine songs that allow the listener to peak inside the very fabric of a band. It's raw, it's dirty, it's uncompromising, and it will punch you square in the kidneys without remorse. And while you are writhing on the floor it will stand over you, menacing, waiting for you to climb to all fours so it can kick you in the gut. The hair on your arms will stand on end as frontwoman Julie Christmas howls out in blood curdling fashion. Your eyes will throb from the inside out at the weight of rhythm section, and your ears will spill blood from the mangled sounds coming from Brendan Tobin's guitar. This isn't music set to leave a smile on your face; this is music that will have you looking out the top of your forehead and smirking at your un-bandaged wounds. But while the power is certainly the most forceful integer in the Made Out of Babies equation, there is an underlying current of malformed beauty to be found within these angry melodies. Take the pained ending to "Fed", where Christmas belts out, "it's right up front and fed" over and over to the explosion of melody that has been building up all song. It's perfect. It's ugly and mean and precious and beautiful.-www.indieworkshop.com
