| Justin Broadrick, founder of Godflesh, and Ted Parsons (from Swans, Killing Joke, & Prong) team up for this debut full-length. From Uraniummusic.com: Jesu was born from the inspired mind of Justin Broadrick who has graced the world of metal with the mighty Godflesh... Although an entirely new entity, Jesu proudly boasts characteristics of previous juggernaut Godflesh while incorporating a whole new spin on their sought-after sound. Mainly consisting of electronic or industrial laden hymns, Jesu manages to soak up all the emotion of any ballad and twist it into surrealistic soundscapes. This is one of a handful of bands (Opeth and Summoning included), that can consistently pull off ten to twenty-minute epics and when the songs conclude, you wish they were longer or perceive that they weren't actually as long as they were. Continuing exactly where Godflesh had progressed when they were laid to rest in the Spring of 2002, but concentrating their sound on the more melancholic and sensitive moments of Broadrick's past is exactly what Jesu brings to the table. Intensely personal lyrics joined by a rock framework especially heard on Tired of Me where often repetitive words quickly get ingrained in your head and you're left singing the lines for days. The vocals really make this project special and help to set Jesu apart from the likes of Thrones for instance who have a more eclectic take on the genre. Anyone that loves strong vocal harmonies and lush melodies will be in an altered state with each listen. |
